For Her Eyes Only: Beat Vaginal Yeast Infections for Good Liz Applegate, Ph.D.Director of Sports Nutrition, University of California at Davis Millions of women face the annoying discomfort of vaginal yeast infections. Yeast infections are caused by an over growth of yeast (candidias) that normally exist in small numbers inside the vagina with general symptoms of vaginal itching or soreness and sometimes a white discharge. The healthy bacteria that live in the vagina can dwindle in numbers allowing the yeast to take over due to dramatic changes in your life, including stress, poor sleep, frequent travel as well as your diet. Before you take any steps, see your physician for a diagnosis because these same symptoms may be a sign of a more serious problem. And if you experience recurring yeast infections (more than four per year) this may also be a sign of underlying trouble such as diabetes or a weakened immune system. The Sugar Misconception Often women are either told by friends or other sources that sugar in the diet causes yeast infections or that cutting sugar out may provide a cure. It's easy to see where this thought comes from – in bread making, yeast feeds off of added sugar resulting in a chemical reaction that makes the bread rise. But consuming sugar in your diet, whether from cookies or naturally occurring in dairy products, does not “feed” yeast infections. The sugar in your diet is digested and absorbed in the small intestine and therefore does not pass into the stool and consequently the vaginal area. Studies show that avoiding sugar does not lessen the likelihood of suffering from yeast infections. But healthy eating overall and some other key preventative steps can help. An Ounce of Prevention Your best defense against yeast infections is prevention. Let's take a look at some simple steps from diet to clothing that can lower the likelihood of suffering from a vaginal yeast infection.
