Since its inception in 1966, Erewhon has defined the standard for “natural” in the health food industry, and has always been synonymous with the utmost in product quality, purity, and integrity. With its continued dedication to maintaining uncompromised standards and its continued influx of energetic hard-working people of the same philosophy, Erewhon was able to grow from a tiny basement storefront on Boston’s Newbury Street to one of the nation’s largest and most important retailers, manufacturers and distributors of natural foods.
But what is Erewhon?
Erewhon (pronounced AIR-wahn) derived its company name from
a famous nineteenth century novel by Samuel Butler. In the novel,
“Erewhon” (made by rearranging the letters of the word “nowhere”)
was a utopia in which it was a crime to be sick, and everyone was
responsible for his or her own health.
Founded in Boston, Massachusetts by two macrobiotic educators
named Michio and Aveline Kushi, Erewhon was on the forefront
of the whole foods movement that emerged in the mid 1960’s.
Their message was simple: a whole foods diet can support health
and help prevent sickness. A whole-grain based natural diet was
necessary for good health.
Erewhon was the first company to establish a Charter of Quality
Standards for Natural Products so you as a consumer always know
what “natural” means regarding Erewhon products. According
to the Charter, the term “natural” describes products that adhere
to the following guidelines:
--- No synthetic additives or preservatives
--- No artificial colors or flavors
--- No hydrogenated or solvent extracted oils
--- No refined flour or sugar
--- Only natural sweeteners such as honey, maple syrup and molasses.
And starting in 1970, Erewhon was a pioneer in contracting with farmers
to produce organically grown crops.
In 1986, Erewhon acquired U.S. Mills. U.S. Mills’ traditional whole grain cereals
and sound manufacturing processes were consistent with Erewhon’s dedication
to all natural minimally processed foods – thus a joining of the two was a natural
progression. In 2009, Attune Foods acquired U.S. Mills with the desire to honor
Erewhon's heritage and build upon it through addressing digestive health
with pure ingredients, simply processed for foods to support digestive health.
Today, the Erewhon brand continues to flourish while holding true to its commitment
to natural and organic foods that play a key role in one’s overall health and well-being.
