Did you know that your digestive system is working hard for you right now? For many of us, our digestive system is a mystery, but it's really nothing to be afraid of. Your digestive system takes great care of you!

First, your digestive system converts food into energy and absorbs important nutrients. Second, it acts as a barrier to prevent unwanted bacteria and toxins from getting into your body. So, it helps your body get what it needs, and it helps keep the bad things out.

The gastrointestinal (GI) tract is the body's digestive tract that is made up of the mouth, stomach, small intestine and large intestine, or colon. The salivary glands, liver, gallbladder and pancreas all support proper functioning of the GI tract.

The functioning of the GI tract is a coordinated series of events that ensure proper digestion of the foods we eat and the ability of our systems to absorb important nutrients.

That sounds like an incredibly complex system doesn't it? To put it simply, the foods we eat travel from our mouths to our stomachs and then to our small intestines and large intestines. The digestive process takes place every step of the way.

Probiotics go to work beginning in the small and large intestines.

The small intestine is responsible for breaking down food, absorbing nutrients into your body, and getting rid of what's not useful.

The small intestine has a large surface area that allows for efficient nutrient absorption. If you stretch it out, it would be the size of a football field!

Because of the large surface area of the small intestine, the majority of the immune function within your digestive tract happens here. This is where your digestive system works really hard to keep bad things out.

The large intestine, also known as the colon, has two primary jobs. It extracts additional nutrients from partially digested food, and it absorbs water.

The large intestine contains flora, a community of naturally-occurring bacteria that help maintain the overall healthy function of your digestive system. Flora help provide new nutrient sources to cells lining the large intestine. Probiotics support that healthy community of flora by helping to maintain just the right balance—so our systems work properly.

That's just the beginning! Check out how the digestive system and probiotics also help you maintain a strong immune system.
