Getting Back on the Healthy Snack Bandwagon
9 Aug 2012
I’m a believer in the saying pride goeth before a fall.
I’ve learned its veracity the hard way. For that reason, even when things are chugging along happily for me in the health & fitness realm, I no longer let myself become, well, prideful.
Weight loss maintained for a while? Careful whatcha brag about as that’s precisely the time you’ll hit a road-bump and encounter a struggle.
On the workout streak to end all workout streaks? Tooteth your horn not. Trust me, just as the final BEEP emerges from your mouth, all exercise-mojo of yours will disappear. Been there. Tooted that. Lost the motivation.
I now prefer to simply keep doing what I’m doing and help as many others as I can along the way. I’ve found the ‘cheering on’ I do for others can come back to help me in unexpected ways.
When people seek my help, it’s often during the explanation process I realize I’m no longer doing what I’d thought I was or living as healthfully as I could.
What’s my point with all this?
Had you asked me if my family and I were rocking the healthy snacks I would have answered with a resounding YES.
When my sister asked me for tips for healthy snackage for her family I realized, as I listed and answered, we’d gotten off-track.
Way.
Gone were the probiotic foods. Vanished were the organic graham crackers and readily-accessible-in-fridge raw veggies.
I went through the inevitable internal-realization process (shock-denial-guilt-acceptance-readyforchange) and emerged with a three pronged plan for getting our family (and my sister’s) back to the healthy snacks.
- I revisited past success(ful snackage). Sadly the summer has derailed my family’s healthful habits. Happily all I needed to do was to STOP, recall a time we were healthy snackers, and remind myself how that looked. I enlisted the husband & child’s help and we created a long list of snacks. The more we brainstormed, the more we remembered healthy snacks we LOVED. If you feel you’ve never been ‘on track’ think about how you imagine a week of healthy snacking might look like for you? Get a pen and get creative with your list.
- I asked for help. My sister turned to me. I tend to look to social media friends when I need ideas or tips. Email, tweet, use Facebook, write a blog post—-lean on your healthy living tribe for both ideas and accountability.
- I STARTED. Immediately. This is the most important piece. Don’t wait till you can go to the grocery and do a kitchen overhaul. Don’t get paralysis by analysis searching for healthy snack perfection. Begin consciously making healthier choices today. You can always tweak/change things later if you discover foods that work better for you or your family. Remember: any choices made *today* with an eye to healthier snacking are better than what you’d have done before (writes the voice of experience). This fact in itself is a major victory.
Has the summer and its proliferation of sweet, sugary treats derailed you?
Or are you as healthy a snacker in the summer as you are the rest of the year?
What’s your current go-to healthy snack? (I’d still love ideas please and thank you.)
Be well!
Carla

Rice crackers and little carrots along with tuna salad. Eating it as I type. I will continue tooting my horn about my workouts and weight as I have ALWAYS loved getting up to run/bike/swim/etc. and have been the same weight since high school-41 years ago! About 127-but I don’t have a scale so I don’t know. You gotta LOVE what you do and not think about food all the time…and if you don’t BUY the unhealthy snacks, guess what? You will find something ELSE to eat in the house! (simple!)

When I snack, it’s fruit, veggies, nuts, and sometime hummus. Lately my downfall has been not enough time to cook. It’s been wild!! I’ve been grabbing this and that, not really planning or making time. I need to get back to that!

I’m sorry you got off track, but it’s comforting to know it happens to all of us. Summer is tough for too – vacations and cookouts and weekends away and camp and just being “off schedule” leads to “junk creep” over here. I’m currently on a peanut-butter kick, and I’m tempering my desire to eat it out of the jar by measuring out a tablespoon or two and eating it on an apple. Or fresh CSA celery. I’m also a hard-cooked egg fan – just one, right outa the fridge. Little shake of seasoning. Very quick, goes down easy, and has a protein/fat one-two punch that keeps me satisfied for a while . . . at least until the ice cream truck comes around again.

Glad to hear you’re back on track. Lately I’ve been grabbing a handful of raw almonds when I need a snack, which is unusually healthy for me.

This August, I’m really taking charge of my healthy snacking habits. I’m turning my “grazing” into mindful eating once more.

I love this post. It is all about helping ourselves and helping others. Prideful spouting doesn’t really accomplish that!
I agree that the key is to start as soon as you see somewhere that needs help. I’m off to figure out what that is in my life…

I’ve had a few unhealthy snacks as a result of being out and about at festivals and such, but overall, I’m happy with how I got right back to eating well. I’m hoping the few handfuls of cheesy caramel popcorn won’t kill me–because otherwise, I did a good job of bringing snacks with me (homemade beef jerky, pistachios and veggies were stuffed in my bag). So it balances out, right?!? :)

There’s something about summer and having the kids around and all the activities that makes it easier to reach for crap. Good for you for recognizing it and taking action! I’m off to Trader Joe’s today myself and plan to get us turned back in the right direction, too.
Favorite snack–homemade trail mix of dried edamame, almonds, dried cherries, and some dark chocolate thrown in!

SO true- especially about the weight maintenance. Whenever I feel too comfy and start eating outside my normal “realm” …I see that number happily creep up

Our derailment happened over the summer big time. Thankfully, I have been replacing the less than stellar with the better choices recently and clearing pantry space for good back to school lunch items, fall crockpot soup and stew goodness, etc. Head screwed back on straight….yea!
Aug 14, 2012 @ 04:06:00
I’ve fallen victim to chips of all varieties. And those darn Cheez-Its!

GREAT POST CARLA! I think most everybody has been here in their lives. We are not perfect – nobody is even though we may wish we were perfect!
I love that you admit it & your steps to get back on track. Plan & DO IT! Most important to me is START NOW!!! I really do not fall that often – rarely even.. and usually it is just a day I am depressed or angry or something & I get eat unplanned food that is not best for me. I don’t wait till tomorrow – I start right them owning it, establishing why I did it & getting right back to my healthy ways..

Excellllent reminders. The summer’s derailed me somewhat, but I’ve also found tons of healthier options at the same time. Love your point that we don’t need to wait for a grand overhaul; smart snacking choices can begin NOW.
Some of my healthy favorites include carrots slices, dried fruit, fresh fruit (apples, bananas), a small yogurt container, nuts… not all at once, of course

My snaking habits are pretty consistent all year round now! Talk to me pre healthy living lifestyle, I was all over the map with my choices….junk food choices. I just ate whatever looked delicious.
I made a choice to be healthy and because of that, I’ve never felt better
I wonder how many times I can say choices in one comment.

This summer has definitely thrown me (and my family) off the healthy eating track….gotten lazy and too many summer gatherings with friends/family as an excuse to indulge. Working to get back us back on track especially before school kicks in!

What really resonates for me in this post is the first part about being prideful…
As for the rest of it, I echo Kierston. My snacking habits are mostly good year ’round with occasional lapses which have nothing to do with the time of year.
Aug 14, 2012 @ 05:27:00
you know, Karen, for some reason that was the strongest message for me as well. to myself. in all all all realms.
Aug 14, 2012 @ 05:39:00
My habits don’t change much year round, but my snacking is probably only about 75% healthy. I need to work on that overall. I love nuts, single serving cheeses, tomatoes, avocado… Heck, I’ll often grab a handful of arugula (love that stuff) or cauliflower. Just a matter of remember that I have them when I’m heading for the pretzel bag.

I love this, Carla! It’s so real, raw and true. I’m currently eating super clean, but I have been indulging in REAL 100% cacao chocolate delights. Snacking is fun:) Go Carla! Xo

Somehow, amazingly somehow, I’ve dodged so many temptations this summer and have emerged with more mojo that I started the summer with. I thank my fellow bloggers and their support for that miracle.
Go to snack, actually, water. I’ve been trying hard to stop and think and ask myself what I really need. Finding that 3 of 4 times when I think I wanna munch, i just wanna hydrate. The 4th time, greek yougurt has been where I turn for a munch snack. Vast improvement when my after lunch snack was essentially a second lunch.

I’m not gonna lie. I am eating a donut as I read this. LOL. It’s on old fashioned, plain. Do I get points for no maple or glaze? Ok, now I feel guilty. Thankfully I have a 6 mile run in a couple hours, that makes me feel better.
Great share, as always.
Aug 14, 2012 @ 09:58:00
Such great suggestions! I have a shelf of good snack foods then I hide the bad ones. Makes it easier to forget that they are even there!
Aug 14, 2012 @ 10:40:00
Great ideas. Most of us get off track in one area or another occasionally.
Aug 14, 2012 @ 11:39:00
I think we all get off track at some point
but as long as we get back on, that is the important part. For me the getting off track is because of boredom more than anything else.
Aug 14, 2012 @ 12:17:00
I too think that the ‘cheering on’ we do for others returns to us as well. I love this post – especially the last bit about getting started immediately. There is no need to ‘wait until Monday’ to make changes.
Aug 14, 2012 @ 13:47:00
Since going gluten-free my snacking has become WAY healthier. I am now snacking on raw nuts and dried fruit, steamed edamame, rice cakes and pb or Nutella (the worst of the lot I think) and popcorn drizzled with EVOO…. no more cookies, jujubes, crackers or chips for me!
Aug 14, 2012 @ 17:37:00
I would love to see your list!!
Aug 14, 2012 @ 18:45:00
Fruit – It’s summer’s best FAST food!
Aug 14, 2012 @ 19:41:00
oh and my current go-to healthy snack is baby carrots and roasted red pepper hummus. nom!

yes yes yes!

I feel like the summer had totally derailed us a bit too. Our schedule has gotten so hectic and I’ve gotten so tired, that healthy snacking has been on the back burner. That’s just not okay. Thanks for the reminder. Our go-to snack changes every day.
Aug 15, 2012 @ 02:38:00
…shoot, this is timely. I guess I’ve fallen off too. Been eating a bit more bread than I should be, perhaps a bit heavy on the peanut butter (even if it is organic). Getting a little too friendly with the ice cream man this past summer…will get on that
