Naughty or Nice: Are You Listening to What Your Body Is Saying?
6 Jun 2011
Just like Santa, your body always knows when you’ve been naughty.
It knows when I’m eating healthy and exercising and rewards me by feeling strong, happy, and energized. It also knows when I’m overindulging. Or letting myself be pulled in too many directions. Or sitting all day long without any walking breaks. Or when I have too many glasses of wine at dinner. And it responds accordingly, leaving me feeling sluggish, stiff, sick, or just flat out exhausted.
Pretty much everything I do related to food and fitness is because of how it makes me feel. I eat healthy food because it makes me feel energized and content. I eat smaller meals and incorporate a lot of snacks because I know how uncomfortable I feel when I get too full, and how cranky I get when I’m too hungry. I exercise because it makes me feel strong and happy. I sleep 7 to 8 hours per night because I find it harder to be positive and make healthy choices throughout the day when I don’t.
Everything comes back to our bodies knowing exactly what’s right for us. Sometimes we don’t always listen (and that’s okay – indulging every once in awhile is healthy, too!), but our body is always there to remind us. All we need to do is listen.

i recently experienced this. on Friday night I had fries & onion rings with a friend. on Saturday I felt sick, sluggish, my stomach was in knots. I felt horrible & my body made me aware of this on Sunday, I hydrated, ate my veggies & got a great night sleep. I woke up feeling fantastic.
ah, incredible body. I praise you.

Anne,
I’ve started a new workout regimen and I have realized how important it is to listen to when my body needs a break!

Good point on listening to our bodies with exercise! It can be so easy to over do it without realizing our bodies also need rest!

Good point, Alison! Listening to our bodies definitely goes both ways – don’t want to overdo it!
