DIY Crinkle Toy Craft Project
Move over random cardboard boxes and paper towels tubes, there’s a much cuter, safer tactile toy in the house. Enter the crinkle toy: a soft, fabric square with a surprise crinkly center that has the power to entertain babies (and pets) for hours. If you can sew a semi-straight line, this project is your new best friend and goto DIY baby shower gift.
MATERIALS
-1 empty box of your favorite Attune Foods cereal product. Our Uncle Sam’s, Erewhon, and Skinners packaging is all BPA free.
-Approximately 1/4 yard of fabric of your choice (organic cotton would be a nice choice for baby). Pre-wash any 100% cotton fabric before beginning.
-Sewing machine and/or hand-stitching skills.
INSTRUCTIONS
-Finish eating the last of your cereal, and remove the BPA free plastic liner from box.
-Trim plastic down to an approximately 8”x8” square (size may vary due to product size). You will end up with two layers of plastic. Wash the plastic squares and set aside to dry.
-Cut fabric into two squares, one inch large than the plastic sheets. For our example that would be two 9” fabric pieces.
-Placing right sides together, stitch around edge as if making a small pillow. Leave a 3 inch opening on one side. Turn fabric right side out.
-Insert the two dry plastic squares into the fabric sleeve, smoothing to fit.
-Hand stitch opening closed.
-Finish by top-stitching around the perimeter of the fabric square, approximately 1/2 an inch from the edge.
(This will prevent the plastic from bunching up and is a key step in creating the crinkle effect. )
VARIATIONS
-Curl one corner through the center of a BPA free teething ring, and sew securely to create a crinkly, teething toy.
-Use up scraps to create mini crinkly quilt, or recycle an outgrown garment for fabric.
